A Fire Warden training course should be undertaken at relevant frequency, usually every year. Under Section 19 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (the 2005 Act) every employer shall identify hazards, assess risks and have a written risk assessment, including any unusual or other risks. To comply with Section 19, employers are required to carry out risk assessments and to record these in the Safety Statement. A fire safety risk assessment should be conducted.

A fire safety risk assessment should include emergency procedures must also be in place and practiced to ensure safe evacuation in the event of a fire. The Act further states that employers are required to prepare and revise adequate emergency plans and procedures and provide the necessary training measures for fire fighting and the evacuation of the workplace. These training requirements can be met by completing the Fire Warden (Marshal) course now available online at the click of a button.

Sections 8, 9 and 10 of this 2005 Act require that sufficient information such as a fire warden training course, and supervision is provided to ensure the safety of employees, and also that such training and instruction, etc. must take account of any employees with specific needs, to ensure their protection against dangers that may affect them. Consideration for all employees and anyone connected with the workplace must form part of how an employer addresses the area of safety, health and welfare and specifically the provision of emergency access and egress.

The role of Fire Wardens and Marshals are very similar in contributing to fire safety within an organisation. There is a legal requirement on employers to prepare an Emergency Plan outlining how the workplace will be evacuated in the event of a fire outbreak.

Fire Warden:
A Fire Warden is a designated person within a department who is allocated responsibilities to help support the ongoing management of fire safety, by contributing to the safety of people in the event of a fire evacuation.

Fire Marshal:
A Fire Marshal identifies fire hazards at their workplace. The Fire Marshal reports the hazards to the appropriate person. They do this by conducting consistent assessments of the building. The fire marshal ensures that everyone leaves the building during an evacuation. They must do this as quickly and as orderly as feasible. A responsible person carries out security measures, they will also make the area as safe as possible in the case of an emergency.

Fire-fighting equipment and training must be in place for employees to use, without exposing themselves to danger, to extinguish a fire in its early stages. The equipment and training course must be suitable to the risks and appropriate staff will need instruction in its proper use. In small premises, having one or two portable extinguishers may be all that is necessary. Signboards or a safety colour (or both) shall be used to mark permanently the location and identification of fire-fighting equipment.
